Day 34: C Tutorial and Weathering the Storm

Future programmers? Highly likely!

Every Friday (ideally), FORMDEV holds a C Programming Tutorial for select Manila Science High School students in DLSU. I say ideally  because there are times when the tutorial would be postponed for various reasons, like unavailability of the students, unavailability of the FORMDEV tutors, or even inclement weather. Today, however, we did hold the tutorial session.

It's been two weeks since the last time we did, and four weeks since the last time I led the tutorial (I wasn't available in the previous two, because it was my girlfriend's birthday during the first one I missed, then my birthday the week after), so I had to get used to leading the tutorial again. A lot of my fallback habits began to show, some bad and some good, but I think I was able to pull through in the end, and I'm just thankful for that. The topic for the tutorial wasn't awfully hard (Count-Controlled Loops), and I had FORMDEV tutors to help me handle the class, but it's really quite different, the set-up of the tutorial, and it makes me feel more self conscious.

For example, one of my friends pointed out that I like to walk up and down the aisle in the middle of the classroom way too much, which might have been distracting for some. I also tend to mix up my English, although this has been something that has been bothering me for quite some time now. Perhaps I'm just being to anxious about the reactions of my students, or maybe it's just me not feeling adequate enough to handle a class. Call it teacher blues, or work related anxiety. I just hope I can dig myself out of this dilemma, and be back to full teaching capacity next week :(

Still, like I said, I think I was able to pull through in the end. I'm especially proud and thankful to my Father for the last portion of the tutorial, when I discussed St. La Salle's life (I think I mentioned yesterday that I'm quite nervous about doing this). I was able to link it somehow with the fact that my students were going to have their periodicals next week. It felt great to see the knowing smiles of my students, and to see them reflect somehow on what I said.

Thank God. Thank God indeed!

Also, a big thank you to everyone who helped in today's tutorial session. I couldn't have done it without you guys; today more than ever I could attest to that (and I think I should put more examples in my slides, before I give my students exercises, I made you do a lot of the explanation on for loops XD). Thank you for being present, and for allowing yourselves to be filled with the Holy Spirit.

Tomorrow, a tropical storm is expected to make landfall in our country, but even tonight we could already feel how devastating it might be. My umbrella got wrecked by the strong winds, and while the rain isn't that strong yet, the same winds made it seem worse than it is. I pray for those who would be directly in the path of the impending storm; may God's strength and protection be with them :(

I suppose that would be it for today. Let's all pray for the safety of everyone, and may tomorrow be a good day despite the weather.
